Is Kickboxing a real art?

Hello, I keep hearing that Kickboxing, isnt a real art, infact is has copied arts like boxing, karate and thai boxing, I understand that all arts have copied something from one or another but I keep hearing people target kickboxing, does anyone know the history of kickboxing? I think it looks really good and would love to train in it. Thanks :D
