Can you put a go phone sim card into a regular at&t phone?

I have a go phone at the moment and i hear you can transfer the sim card into any other at&t phone and it will work with the same go phone plan. am i able to do this with a pda/smart phone without having to buy a web browsing/data plan and just use the phone for texting and calling?
